The plug facing is permanently bonded (vulcanized) to the face of the plug

Because of the cylindrically shaped plug, the rubber compresses to make a tight seal, unlike round port valves where the rubber is deformed.
Chloroprene (CR) is the typical plug facing material. Other optional materials are available for higher temperature or corrosive media.
How to Specify
The plug shall have a cylindrical seating surface eccentrically offset from the center of the shaft. Plug shall not contact the seat until at least 90% closed. Resilient plug facing shall be Chloroprene (CR). Spherical shaped plugs are not acceptable.
