APCO SmartCHECK Pump Control Valve Controls Pressure Surges and Prevents Damaging Backflow (3/29/2017)
Designed for maximum performance and economy, the APCO SmartCHECK Pump Control Valve (CPC) is a single valve that combines the functionality of a full-featured electric motor operated pump control valve with the best features of APCO’s premium swing check valve. The SmartCHECK Pump Control Valve has been engineered to control pressure surges during normal pump startups and shutdowns, and to close positively upon power failure – without the need for expensive hydraulic power units, accumulators and maintenance intensive hydraulic controls.
The SmartCHECK Pump Control Valve utilizes the premium APCO CVS-6000 swing check valve with a unique torque unit which can be operated with any brand of valve electric motor operator. The SmartCHECK Pump Control Valve is ideal for many applications including raw sewage, wastewater, raw water, clean water or any fluid pumped through a pipeline.
The SmartCHECK Pump Control Valve produces low head loss - lower than any valve in its class. The unique torque unit allows normal function, but will automatically close upon power failure, preventing backflow. Speed adjustments control fluid acceleration and deceleration, minimizing pressure surges.
The SmartCHECK Valve has an internally pressure balanced design that ensures reliable closure. During power outage or loss of pressure, the built-in check valve will quickly and reliably close to prevent damaging backflow without fear of sticking open. In the event a pipeline needs to be drained or backflushed, the optional hold-open feature of the SmartCHECK valve allows for reverse flow that can be initiated either electrically or manually.

DeZURIK valves are used by mines worldwide in slurries, oil sands, process fluids, corrosive media/acids, steam, water, air and dry solids applications. The display features the new Slurry Knife Gate Valves, ANSI Class Severe Service Knife Gate Valves, Urethane Lined Knife Gate Valve, Hilton Bonneted Knife Gate Valves, Extreme Service and Maximum Duty Knife Gate Valves, Eccentric Plug Valves, High Performance Butterfly Valves, RCV Rotary Control Valves, Rubber Flapper Swing Check Valves, and ASU Combination Air Valves.
Two 18” and three 14” PEC Eccentric Plug Valves were removed from service after over 60 years on the Intake Structure to the Primary Clarifiers at a Water Treatment Plant in Omaha, Nebraska. These are now the PEC Eccentric Plug Valves with the longest recorded service life. Over the past 60 years, these valves handled flows of 12 to 15 MGD and were cycled a couple times each day. The valves were originally installed when this portion of the plant was built in the 1950’s. When removed, the valves were still in operation, used daily, and performing well. Since the facility needed to automate the valves, they decided it was a good opportunity to replace them with new, automated DeZURIK Eccentric Plug Valves.
In 2009, DeZURIK Eccentric Plug Valves were removed from the St. Cloud Water Treatment Plant after 53 years of service. At that time they were the oldest valves known to be in service. DeZURIK KSL Slurry Knife Gate Valves, designed for on-off isolation service, are ideally suited for applications consisting of abrasive, high solids content, wet or dry media in the mining, power and aggregate industries.
Available in two styles, Long Body Design (KSL-LA) and Short Body Design (KSL-SD), DeZURIK Slurry Knife Gate Valves feature sleeves of natural rubber, EPDM or other elastomers that are compressed by sleeve retainers, allowing the valve to provide drip-tight shutoff and exceptional service life in abrasive and erosive applications.
Features of Slurry Knife Gate Valves include:
• Bi-directional, drip-tight shutoff to full pressure rating.
• Field replaceable sleeves with encapsulated supporting ring.
• Full port reduces turbulence and pressure drop across the valve.
• Sleeve compression eliminates cavity where solids can collect.
• Sleeve design eliminates the requirement for flange gaskets.
• Gate fully retracts out of the flow path in the open position.
• Optional open and closed position lock-outs.
DeZURIK Slurry Knife Gate Valves are available in sizes 2-24" (50-600mm) with larger sizes available on application. Temperature ratings to 177°F (81°C) as standard, and up to 300°F (150°C) with high temperature optional seat materials. Depending on the application requirements, the cast body is available in Ductile Iron, Carbon Steel and various Stainless Steel or higher alloy materials.

Engineered to limit potential damage to pump systems, the APCO Surge Relief Angle Valve (SRA) limits the surge pressure magnitude commonly associated with sudden pump shutdown in fluid piping systems.
Designed with a smooth flow area and minimal obstructions for efficient surge relief, the SRA Valve protects the system by opening when the system pressure exceeds the relief pressure setting of the valve disc. As the disc opens, the surge pressure is spilled and dissipated through the valve. The valve will remain open as long as the system pressure exceeds the valve’s relief pressure setting, and slowly begin to close at an adjustable rate as pressure subsides.
The Surge Relief Angle Valve is an elbow body style surge relief valve that is held normally closed by a compression spring or system of nested springs. SRA Valves are available in sizes 2-16" (50-400mm) and with pressure relief ratings up to 200 psi (1380 kPa). They are available in ductile iron with seats of Acrylonitrile-Butadiene (NBR), Terpolymer of Ethylene, Propylene and A Diene (EPDM) or Fluoro Rubber (FKM).

KGO O-Port Gate Valves are designed to be used on virtually all types of liquids, slurries and dry materials. The valves are specially constructed to handle high-consistency paper stock, wood chips and fly ash, as well as slurries with high solids content and highly viscous fluids.
KGO Valves are ideally suited for High Density Cleaners, Cyclones, Trash Dump Valves and Refiner Bypass or Isolation applications in the Pulp & Paper, Mining and Power industries.
DeZURIK KGO-CST Valves are available is sizes 2-24" (50-600mm) and feature a cast body rated to 150 psi CWP. Metal or resilient seats are available in 316 Stainless Steel, Terpolymer of Ethylene, Propylene and A Diene (EPDM), PTFE or Reinforced PTFE.
Hilton KGO-FAB Valves (H-1500 Thru Port) are available in sizes 2-66" (50-1700mm) with a wide variety of flange drillings, body materials, gate materials and hard facing options. They also feature a fully fabricated body. Unidirectional or bi-directional sealing is available as an option. In addition, multiple packing options, seat options and seat facing options are available to meet the most rigorous applications.

DeZURIK is now publishing 3D or 2D CAD models for download on the product pages of our web site. The detailed 3D product information in 45 different file formats makes incorporating DeZURIK valves into a piping layout at the design stage quick and easy. To locate drawings, go to the Product page on the DeZURIK web site and select the link under the CAD Files heading. Use the dropdown boxes to select the valve size, actuator, etc. that you would like to view or download. Use the dropdown box to choose the file format you prefer. The first time you download, you will need to become a registered user. This registration only has to be completed once and your log-in information can be saved so you don’t have to re-enter it the next time you download a drawing. The Product Spotlight in the newest edition of Treatment Plant Operator magazine features the APCO Single Body Combination Air Valve. The article, titled “DeZURIK High-Performance Combination Air Valves Solve Problems Caused by Pipeline Grease” describes the features of the ASU valve that allow it to perform successfully in applications handling dirty and greasy fluids. Premium design and unmatched durability are hallmarks of APCO CVS-60000/6000A Swing Check Valves. Recommended for clean and dirty services - including water, sewage or industrial applications - the heavily constructed valves are designed to handle higher flow rates, pressures and withstand shock.
Specific features of the CVS 6000/6000A include a full waterway flow-through area and low head loss; a high-strength stainless steel shaft; a double-clevis, self-aligning disc; and top entry design allowing all internal parts to be easily accessible in the field.
Available in sizes 2-66" (50-1700mm), CVS-6000/6000A Swing Check Valves can be rated up to 640 psi CWP (4400 kPa) and are available with ANSI Class 125/150 or Class 250/300 flanges. Closure control devices include Air Cushioned Cylinder, Oil Controlled Cylinder, Bottom Mounted Buffer, Lever & Spring, and Lever & Weight. In addition, the CVS-6000/6000A may be ordered as a convertible model that allows field conversion of the closure device.
The valves are offered with Acrylonitrile-Butadiene (NBR), Terpolymer of Ethylene, Propylene and A Diene (EPDM) or Fluoro Rubber (FKM) resilient disc seats, or cast aluminum bronze or stainless steel metal seats for durability. Body seats can be ordered with a NBR, EPDM or FKM resilient seal.

DeZURIK’s new ECB-CP Pump & Control Valve Interface for Solenoid Controlled Valves is designed to provide control between the pump and pump control valve to minimize pressure surges in the fluid handling system when the pump starts and stops. The pre-programmed controller properly sequences and controls the pump and pump control valve start-up and shut-down procedure, thereby protecting the pumping system from damage due to mechanical, hydraulic or power failure.
Specific features of the improved ECB-CP pump controller include local control buttons mounted on the door of the electric control box interface; visual indication of system status throughout all modes of operation; configurable timers to control sequencing; and automatic pump shutdown in emergency situations.

DeZURIK AWWA Butterfly Valves are highlighted in a Video about Metro Vancouver’s Coquitlam UV Water Treatment Facility. The project for a primary UV treatment facility included 32 DeZURIK AWWA Butterfly Valves: two 120” valves, four 96” valves, six 54” valves and twenty 48” valves. When a wastewater pumping station needed a 42” and a 48” metal seated knife gate valve to fit in a limited space, they contacted DeZURIK about a Hilton Bonneted Knife Gate Valve. Hilton’s engineers worked with the customer to design the compact valves with dual non-rising stems and bevel gears actuated by an electric motor.
