When choosing a valve to control water release from a reservoir, many factors must be taken into consideration. This article discusses the variety of valves available, consideration for their operation, and advantages and disadvantages based on application.
U.S. BUILT VALVES FOR HYDRO APPLICATIONS
Since 1976, when DeZURIK built its first jet flow gate for a Bureau of Reclamation dam in New Mexico, the company has served the hydro industry, primarily supplying valves for releasing water from dams through low-level outlets. The custom valve designer and fabricator is especially known among hydro industry owners, engineers, and consultants for its popular throttling knife gate valve. In this interview, Doug Hartsock, DeZURIK’s hydro applications engineer, talks with Hydro Leader about the company’s products, which are manufactured in the United States.
HYDRO APPLICATIONS FOR THE THROTTLING KNIFE GATE VALVE
Although conventional engineering wisdom holds that gate valves are not to be used to throttle flow, not all gate valves are the same. The throttling knife gate valve has a proven record in the hydro industry when installed in inlet and outlet works as a guard valve or intake valve, or as an economical alternative to the fixed cone valve or jet flow gate in low- to medium-head applications.
Eccentric Plug Valve Accurately Controls Flow for Fish Ladder Attraction Pool
A West Coast engineering firm was designing a fish ladder as part of a water supply project for a public utility district. Water flow at the proper velocity at the entrance pool of the fish ladder is critical to attracting fish to enter the fish ladder. The utility district needed a control valve that would provide high flow capacity and handle the high velocity required by this application. The DeZURIK Eccentric Plug Valve was found to be an ideal control valve choice due to the high velocity and potential cavitation in this application.
Throttlng Knife Gate Valves Provide Economical Solution for Low-Head, Free Discharge
Throttling valves are used on the outlet of dams to regulate the release of water for level control. The primary objective of this type of valve is free discharge of water into the atmosphere, often under a high differential pressure. Most valves are not suitable for free discharge service. Bonneted throttling knife gate valves specifically designed for this service offer an economical option for low-head applications up to 230 feet of head (70 meters), or 100 psi (690 kPa). They are less expensive than valves designed for high head applications (over 100 psi, 690 kPa) such as jet flow gates and fixed cone valves.
Hydraulic Power Unit & Inlet Valve Provide Reliability & Safety for Reservoir
A water utility in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States required a unique solution to a difficult problem. A new inlet valve needed to be installed in the main water storage reservoir that supplied the city’s drinking water. The valve would be installed over one hundred feet underwater and operate from the control house on the downstream face of the dam. The 66” inlet valve is controlled by the HPU in the control house. The inlet valve allows the conduit passing under the dam to be dewatered for inspection and also serves as an emergency shutoff valve for the reservoir.
